A Delta Air Lines flight from Maui to Seattle was diverted to Honolulu on Saturday night after fumes were observed shortly after takeoff. Delta said Flight 394 departed Kahului with 189 passengers aboard before the flight crew followed procedures to divert.

After the Airbus A321neo landed, crews observed fuel discharging from the aircraft. Passengers deplaned using air stairs and were taken by bus from the aircraft.

Honolulu EMS said multiple units responded around 11 p.m. after people reported headaches and nausea from inhaling fumes. Three women, ages 42, 27 and 31, were treated and taken to an emergency room in stable condition, and the Federal Fire Department transported one additional patient in stable condition.

Delta said technicians will inspect the aircraft, that passengers would continue to Seattle on another aircraft on Sunday morning, and that the airline is issuing refunds and reaching out to passengers directly.
