Direct carbon dioxide emissions from commercial passenger aircraft are expected to rise by 87% between 2025 and 2050, according to new forecasts from aviation consultancy IBA.

The projection comes despite an anticipated 20% gain in the fuel efficiency of the global commercial passenger fleet, with traffic growth outpacing fleet renewal improvements.

IBA estimates direct tailpipe emissions from passenger aircraft will rise from 843 million tonnes of CO2 in 2025 to 1,583 million tonnes in 2050.

The company's modelling combines aircraft-level delivery and retirement forecasts with projected demand, utilisation and load factors.
